How can irregular-shaped products be shrink wrapped reliably?

Irregular products can be shrink wrapped when presentation, film clearance, sharp features, air release, support and heat exposure are proved across the real product range.

Repeatable presentation matters more as product geometry becomes less regular

An irregular-shaped product is not automatically unsuitable for shrink wrapping, but the film must clear protrusions, collapse into voids without uncontrolled stress and survive corners or sharp features. The product also needs stable support through sealing, transfer, the heat tunnel and cooling. Trials should include every extreme geometry, orientation and production condition rather than one easy sample.

Define the complete film envelope

Measure the product in the orientation it will be wrapped, including handles, projections, stacked parts, loose components and any movement. The loose film must pass through the sealing route without snagging and still provide the accepted seam and shrink recovery.

Identify stress concentrators

Sharp corners, points, rough surfaces and small contact areas can concentrate film stress. Investigate product orientation, edge protection, film construction and gauge with the film supplier instead of relying on extra heat to force conformity.

Control trapped air and deep voids

Large cavities can hold air and delay contact between film and product. Seal position, bag size, intentional perforation, product orientation and airflow should be assessed together. Excessive ballooning can move the product or overload a weak seal.

Support the product until the film cools

An irregular base may rock or tilt on the conveyor. Warm film can continue to move after the heated zone. Provide stable infeed, tunnel support, discharge transfer and cooling before close guides or accumulation.

Can any irregular-shaped product be shrink wrapped?

No. Suitability depends on whether the product can be presented safely and repeatably, the film can clear and shrink around the geometry, the product tolerates the heat process, and the finished pack survives handling. Sharp features, unstable bases, loose parts or deep voids may need a different orientation, support, protective feature or packaging process.

How are sharp corners handled during shrink wrapping?

Start by identifying where the film is stretched or trapped. Options may include changing orientation, increasing clearance, using approved edge protection or selecting a film construction and gauge suited to the stress. The film supplier and machine trial should confirm the solution; extra tunnel heat can make a corner failure worse.

Why does film balloon around an irregular product?

Air can remain trapped in cavities or a loose film envelope while the outside surface heats. Check bag size, seal condition, product orientation, intentional air release, airflow and speed.
