A repeatable method for changing products, pack formats, guides, film and recipes without losing seal, tunnel or cooling control.

Changeover method

Treat changeover as a controlled release to a new production condition

A change can affect product presentation, film path, seal, tunnel loading, guides, controls and final quality. A repeatable sequence prevents the old recipe or material from being applied to a new pack without evidence.

Prepare

Confirm product, film, change parts, recipe, tools, approved sample and safe work instruction.

Change

Isolate where required, fit verified parts, adjust guides, load film and restore guards.

Verify

Check presentation, seal, actual speed, heat process, cooling and first-off pack.

Release

Record settings, sign off the accepted sample and monitor the first stable production run.

Identify the exact change type

A product-size change, film-width change, film-supplier change, pack-pattern change and heat-sensitive product change are not equivalent. State which process inputs change and which approved elements remain valid.

Use verified change parts and references

Label and store guides, formers, stops or other parts by machine and product family. Record positions or reference marks only where the machine design and procedure support them; do not improvise adjustment points.

Protect the film and seal path

Confirm reel identity, orientation, threading, tension, tracking, perforation and seal cleanliness. Remove old material and labels so an unapproved reel cannot remain associated with the new recipe.

Release after stable evidence

The first visually acceptable pack may not represent steady tunnel loading. Confirm the agreed number of packs, a normal gap and restart where relevant, then retain the approved sample and final settings.

Changeover record

Create a page-specific changeover sheet for each product family

The sheet should be concise enough to use at the machine while retaining the evidence needed to reproduce the accepted setup and investigate later drift.

Do not inherit an old recipe blindly

A similar pack may use different film, thermal load, airflow access or product tolerance. Copying settings is a starting hypothesis only; first-off and stable-run evidence are still required.

Measure changeover loss consistently

Record planned stop time, film used, rejected packs and time to accepted stable production. Consistent evidence helps decide whether guides, pre-set parts, recipe controls or training should be improved.

Escalate uncontrolled variation

If operators need repeated unauthorised adjustments, the changeover reference, material control, machine condition or product tolerance may be inadequate. Investigate the cause rather than normalising recipe drift.

Changeover readiness check

  • Correct products, containers, trays or groups covering the required tolerance.
  • Labelled production film or sleeves and enough material for verification.
  • Approved recipe and accepted sample or annotated pack standard.
  • Clean, identified and undamaged change parts and authorised tools.
  • Machine manual and site safe-working/isolation procedure.
  • Guide, transfer, conveyor and cooling references.
  • First-off inspector and release authority available.
  • Method for recording time, waste, deviations and final settings.

Shrink-wrapper changeover questions

Should every product have its own recipe?

Products can share a verified recipe only when film, pack geometry, thermal load, acceptance and machine setup are demonstrably compatible. Otherwise retain a controlled product-specific or family-specific record.

Is the first acceptable pack enough to release production?

Not always. The tunnel and line may behave differently under normal loading. Confirm the agreed stable-run condition and any gap/restart check before final release.

What should happen when the film supplier changes?

Treat the new material as a controlled change. Confirm supplier data, reel dimensions, sealing, shrink behaviour, appearance and stable production before inheriting the old recipe.

How can changeover time be improved safely?

Use prepared labelled parts, verified settings, clear responsibilities, clean film handling and an agreed first-off standard. Do not save time by bypassing guards, isolation or inspection.
