A practical site-preparation guide covering delivery access, services, working clearances, line interfaces, commissioning and handover.

Site preparation

Confirm the physical and service envelope before delivery

Installation planning should use the final quoted machine configuration and documentation. Preliminary website dimensions help with early layout, but access, working clearances, services, ventilation, guarding and line interfaces must be confirmed for the supplied equipment.

Access from delivery point to final position

Measure doors, corridors, turns, lifts, floor loading and any need to remove panels or use lifting equipment. Include the packed or transport dimensions where supplied, not only the assembled machine footprint.

Operating and maintenance clearance

Allow space for operators, reel loading, product loading, doors, guards, electrical panels, heaters, fans, conveyors and routine maintenance. Do not place a machine against a wall merely because its nominal footprint fits.

Electrical and other services

Confirm voltage, phase, frequency, protective device, isolator, cable route and load from the final machine documentation. Where compressed air, extraction, ventilation or network/control connections are required, record pressure, flow, quality and connection responsibility from the quoted specification.

Heat, ventilation and working environment

Heat tunnels discharge warm air and product. Assess room ventilation, operator comfort, combustible storage, temperature-sensitive processes and any required extraction through a competent site review. Do not obstruct machine cooling or ventilation openings.

Infeed, outfeed and line controls

Record conveyor heights, direction, product pitch, transfer gaps, guides, accumulation, emergency-stop philosophy and stop/start signals. Include enough discharge distance for film cooling before close guidance or compression.

Safe installation and handover

Agree isolation, guarding, access restrictions, site induction, lifting responsibility, commissioning area and the method for returning adjacent equipment to service. Safety and conformity decisions must be completed by competent people for the final installation.

Use the final quotation, layout and machine documentation to complete this site record. Do not infer unknown utilities from a similar model.

Installation scope

Plan the line boundary and responsibility matrix

Many delays occur at the boundary between the machine supplier and the site. Define who provides each service, conveyor interface, lifting activity, control signal, guard modification and acceptance resource before the installation date.

Freeze the approved layout

Use a dimensioned drawing showing machine orientation, operator side, service entry, panel access, infeed/outfeed, cooling and maintenance zones. Mark fixed columns, walls, doors, drains, pipework and overhead restrictions.

Confirm products and film are available

Commissioning requires representative products and enough labelled production film for setup, sustained running, gaps, restart and changeover. Substitute materials can invalidate the agreed process and delay acceptance.

Prepare acceptance and training records

Agree the pass/fail pack standard, trial duration, authorised signatories, operator groups and language/document needs. Retain the final recipes, approved samples and any actions remaining after commissioning.

Pre-installation pack

  • Final quotation, general arrangement, machine and transport dimensions.
  • Approved delivery route and lifting/positioning method.
  • Electrical and other service schedule based on the final configuration.
  • Line interface and control-signal schedule.
  • Risk, access, guarding and isolation review for the integrated installation.
  • Representative products, production film and waste-handling plan.
  • FAT/open-action list, commissioning plan and acceptance matrix.
  • Training attendees, manuals, recipe ownership and handover signatories.

Installation planning questions

Can website dimensions be used as the final installation drawing?

No. Website values are suitable for early screening only. Use the final quoted configuration and approved general arrangement, including working and maintenance clearances.

What electrical supply is required?

It depends on the exact machine and options. Confirm voltage, phase, frequency, load, protection and connection from the final documentation; do not infer them from another model.

Does a heat tunnel need ventilation or extraction?

The requirement depends on machine design, room, film, production duty and site assessment. Confirm heat discharge and any extraction or ventilation needs for the final installation with competent people.

How much space is needed after the tunnel?

Enough to support and cool the pack before the next close guide, compression or handling step. The distance depends on film, pack, tunnel condition, ambient environment and downstream process.

Send the proposed layout before the installation scope is fixed

Provide the machine position, access route, available services, conveyor interfaces, overhead restrictions, operator/maintenance clearances and commissioning plan so the final configuration can be checked against the site.
