This glossary explains the language used across the Lancing shrink-wrapping machinery pages. Definitions are practical project terms rather than model-specific specifications; the exact machine documentation and production film data remain authoritative.

Air release
A controlled way for trapped air to leave a film pack during shrinking, often through specified perforation or another approved method.
Aperture
The usable opening through which the wrapped pack travels. Product clearance should include loose film, movement and guides.
Accepted pack
A finished pack that meets the agreed seal, appearance, product-condition and handling criteria under defined test conditions.
Actual conveyor speed
The verified belt or product travel speed used during an approved trial, distinguished from a nominal line target or unverified display value.
Chamber shrink machine
A machine that seals and shrinks a film pack within one enclosed operating cycle.
Collation
The controlled arrangement of products into the count, rows and orientation required before wrapping.
Cooling condition
The point after heat at which film and product can tolerate the next guide, label, compression, stacking or handling operation.
Dog ears
Triangular or projecting folds of film that can remain at pack corners after shrinking. Film amount, geometry, air release and heat distribution can contribute.
Dwell time
The period for which film and pack are exposed to the heated process. It depends on heated length, actual speed, transfers and product movement.
FAT
Factory acceptance test: an agreed test of the specified equipment before shipment under the available factory conditions.
Film gauge
The film thickness specified by the material supplier. Gauge can affect sealing, strength, shrink response and reel yield.
Film layflat
The width of a flattened tubular sleeve. It is a material dimension used in sleeve and label applications.
Film shrink curve
Supplier data showing how film contraction develops under stated test temperatures and exposure conditions. It guides trials but is not a universal tunnel recipe.
First-off approval
The documented release of the first acceptable pack after setup or changeover, normally followed by a stable-run confirmation where required.
Heat shrink tunnel
A conveyor-based heated enclosure that applies controlled thermal exposure to wrapped products or sleeves.
Heat-sensitive feature
A product, container, label, closure, liner, adhesive, print or component that can be changed by the shrink process.
L-sealer
A sealing machine with an L-shaped seal arrangement used to form a substantially enclosed film pack before shrinking.
Line pitch
The controlled distance or timing between products as they travel through an automatic line.
Loose-film envelope
The film volume around the product after sealing and before shrinking, including allowance for product height, corners and air release.
Open-sided bundle
A shrink-wrapped group with film around the main bundle while openings remain at the sides, commonly associated with sleeve bundling.
Pack pattern
The number, rows, orientation and support arrangement of products within a multipack or bundle.
POF
Polyolefin shrink film, a material family commonly considered for clear presentation wrapping subject to the exact construction and application.
PE shrink film
Polyethylene shrink film, a material family commonly considered for stronger sleeve bundles subject to construction, gauge and trial.
PVC shrink
A PVC-based shrink material or application, often associated with sleeves or capsules. The exact material and product heat response must be confirmed.
Process window
The recorded range of product, film and machine conditions that produces an accepted pack repeatably.
Production film
The exact approved material intended for routine manufacture, identified by supplier, code, construction and dimensions.
Recipe
The controlled machine settings and references linked to a specific approved product and film combination.
SAT
Site acceptance test: an agreed demonstration after installation using the final site services, interfaces, operators and production conditions in scope.
Seal window
The controlled combination of time, temperature/energy, pressure, film condition and equipment state that forms an accepted seal.
Sleeve applicator
Equipment that cuts, opens and places a shrink sleeve or band on a container before the heat stage.
Sleeve sealer
A machine that forms and seals a film sleeve around a product group before tunnel shrinking, commonly leaving open sides.
Sustained output
Accepted packs produced over an agreed representative period including normal loading and defined operating conditions, rather than an isolated cycle.
Thermal load
The heat absorbed by products, film, conveyor and air under a particular pack spacing, product temperature and production rate.
Tunnel curtains
Flexible or designed barriers at tunnel openings that can influence heat retention and airflow. Their condition should follow the machine manual.

Using the glossary

Apply the terms to a controlled machinery brief

Consistent language reduces ambiguity between procurement, production, engineering, film suppliers and machine builders. Link every important term to a measurable product, material or acceptance record.

Describe output as accepted production

State the number of good packs over a representative period and the conditions used. Separate that requirement from an isolated published machine speed.

Name the exact film

Use supplier, code, construction, gauge and dimensions. Terms such as POF, PE or PVC identify broad material families but do not define a complete recipe.

Define the finished pack

Record seal position, side opening, corner appearance, sleeve location, product condition and cooling state. An approved sample or annotated photograph gives the team a shared reference.

Record the process window

Link product, film, recipe, actual speed, loading, airflow and cooling evidence. When one input changes, assess whether the approval remains valid.
