Shrink wrapping and stretch wrapping use different films, machinery and pack principles. Shrink film is positioned around a product or group and heated so it contracts. Stretch film is elongated and wrapped under tension, commonly around palletised or bundled loads. The correct choice starts with the unit being packed and the required handling result.

Questions about shrink wrap and stretch wrap

The processes can both use transparent plastic film, but they should not be treated as interchangeable equipment choices.

Is shrink wrap the same as pallet wrap?

No. “Pallet wrap” commonly refers to stretch film applied under tension around a pallet load. Shrink wrap is a heat-activated film process. Some large-load applications use specialist shrink covers, but that is a different system and should not be assumed from product shrink-wrapping machinery.

State whether the requirement is an individual pack, multipack, tray, carton or pallet load before selecting equipment.

Can stretch wrap replace shrink wrap for an individual retail pack?

Usually not as a direct replacement. Stretch film relies on overlap, tension and cling, while a retail shrink pack may require a controlled seal, clear presentation and close conformity around one product. The finish and opening method are different.

If the purpose is only temporary grouping or transit restraint, describe that requirement rather than specifying either film by name.

Can shrink wrap be used to secure a pallet load?

Specialist pallet shrink systems exist, but the shrink wrapping machinery on this website is primarily presented for products, cartons, trays, multipacks, bottles and sleeves. A pallet-load duty requires separate evidence for load stability, film construction, heat method and site safety.

Do not scale a product tunnel or sleeve wrapper to a pallet application without a purpose-designed review.

Which process can create a fully enclosed pack?

A suitable shrink-film route can create full enclosure when the film and sealing pattern close the required edges. Many sleeve-wrapped packs remain intentionally open at the ends, and stretch wrap normally relies on overlapping layers rather than a heat seal.

Full enclosure does not automatically mean watertight or sterile; the required barrier must be defined and tested.

Which process is better for mixed product sizes?

Both processes can accommodate a range, but the practical answer depends on how often sizes change and what finish is required. Shrink wrapping may need film-width, guide, seal and recipe changes; stretch wrapping may need a different wrap pattern, tension and load support.

Compare the full changeover and acceptance method for the actual format family rather than assuming one process is universally more flexible.

What should a buyer provide when unsure whether shrink or stretch wrapping is suitable?

Provide photographs, dimensions, weight, pack or pallet pattern, handling route, required protection, presentation, opening method, output and site constraints. Explain the problem to solve rather than naming a film process.
