How to select and trial shrink wrapping for mixed SKUs, presentation packs, kits and dispatch workflows without relying on a generic machine label.

Choose the process from order profile, pack variation and dispatch handling

Ecommerce and fulfilment operations may need product protection, grouped kits, presentation packs or tamper-indicating bands across a changing SKU mix. The strongest route is based on the real order profile and accepted dispatch pack, not the word “ecommerce”.

Separate product protection from carrier packaging

Define what the shrink film must achieve: surface protection, unitisation, presentation, dust protection or visible opening evidence. Shrink film may sit inside another dispatch pack; it should not be assumed to replace the protection needed for the full distribution journey.

Map SKU and batch variation

Record daily product families, dimensions, weight, heat sensitivity, batch size and change frequency. A flexible chamber or semi-automatic L-seal route may suit mixed batches, while stable repeated packs can justify automatic presentation and line integration.

Protect labels and scanning

Identify product barcodes, dispatch labels and graphics that must remain readable. Film seams, wrinkles, glare and distortion can affect scanning. Decide whether labels are applied before or after shrinking and prove the complete sequence.

Include manual handling and downstream packing

Check operator loading, pack weight, cooling, tote or carton transfer, accumulation and dispatch packing. The process should not create hot-film handling, awkward reaches or a pack that is damaged at the next station.

Design a repeatable release process for a changing SKU mix

High variety makes material and recipe control important. Product families should share a setup only when dimensions, film, thermal load and quality standard have been proven compatible.

Create product families by process risk

Group SKUs by loose-film envelope, weight, heat sensitivity, stability and required finish. A cosmetic colour change may not need a new recipe; a different tray, coating, closure or thermal mass might.

Keep film and recipe identity visible

Use labelled reels and a controlled first-off standard. Prevent unapproved substitutes from inheriting settings merely because they look similar. Record setup waste and time by product family.

Prove the dispatch sequence

Run the pack through cooling, scanning, labelling, tote/carton loading and any stacking or compression. A shrink result is not accepted until it remains usable at the next fulfilment step.

Plan growth without inventing future capacity

Provide known future SKU extremes and output scenarios. Machinery can be reviewed for reasonable allowance, but suitability for an unknown future product should not be claimed without evidence.

Ecommerce shrink-wrapping questions

Is one shrink-wrapper suitable for every ecommerce SKU?

Usually the product range must be screened by size, weight, heat sensitivity, stability, film and required finish. A machine may cover a defined family, but unknown or materially different products need assessment.

Should dispatch labels be applied before or after shrinking?

It depends on the label, film, heat process, scanning and workflow. Test the complete sequence and ensure barcodes and addresses remain readable and correctly positioned.

What output figure should a fulfilment operation use?

Use accepted packs over a representative period including loading, film replenishment, SKU changes, inspection and normal interruptions, not an isolated machine cycle.

Can shrink film replace transit packaging?

Only if the complete distribution requirement has been assessed and proven. Define the film’s role and test the final dispatch pack; do not assume shrink film alone provides all impact, moisture or tamper protection needed.
