Printed-product selection

Select the route from pack presentation, edge condition and batch pattern

Books, catalogues, manuals, calendars and other printed products are often flat and presentation-sensitive. Selection should account for sharp corners, variable thickness, surface marking, static, film clarity, heat response and the way products are loaded and handled after shrinking.

Define the presentation standard

Agree film clarity, seal location, corner appearance, permitted folds, surface condition and whether the pack must remain scannable or readable through the film. An approved sample is more useful than the instruction “tight wrap”.

Use production print and paper construction

Different covers, coatings, inks, adhesives and paper stacks can respond differently to heat and film pressure. Include the least rigid, most heavily coated, thickest and thinnest products in trials.

Protect sharp edges and corners

Square corners can concentrate stress and puncture thin film, particularly during transfers or excessive tightening. Check the loose-film envelope, seal position, perforation, tunnel airflow and downstream contact points.

Choose automation from product consistency

Mixed short runs may favour flexible manual or semi-automatic presentation. Stable high-volume formats can support automatic feeding, but product separation, orientation and transfer should be proven with the real paper stock.

Samples and information for a printed-matter trial

  • Smallest and largest length, width, thickness and complete weight.
  • Cover, coating, ink, binding, adhesive and any heat-sensitive insert.
  • Production film supplier, code, gauge, width/fold and perforation.
  • Approved seal position, clarity, corner and surface standard.
  • Barcode, title or graphic areas that must remain readable.
  • Batch size, product mix, required accepted output and change frequency.
  • Operator loading or automatic feed condition.
  • Cooling, stacking, boxing, labelling and dispatch handling.

Application checks

Trial the points most likely to affect a flat presentation pack

A representative trial should follow the pack through sealing, shrinking, cooling and the next real handling step. This prevents a visually acceptable tunnel sample from failing during stacking or dispatch.

Film envelope and air release

Too much film can create large corner folds, while insufficient allowance can overstress corners or seals. Check perforation or other air release with the real product thickness and orientation.

Heat and surface condition

Inspect covers, laminate, ink, adhesive, binding and inserts after cooling. Do not assume a paper product is insensitive to heat or compression because its dimensions remain unchanged.

Static and product separation

Light sheets, sleeves or glossy products can be difficult to separate and present automatically. Demonstrate the intended feeder or operator method across the actual stock and ambient production condition.

Cooling and stacking

Warm film can mark, tighten or block when packs are stacked too soon. Define the cooling distance and stacking pressure needed before boxing or pallet handling.

Books and printed-matter questions

Which machine is commonly considered for individual books or cartons?

An L-sealer followed by a heat tunnel is a common starting route for substantially enclosed presentation film. Chamber machinery may suit compact mixed batch work. Final selection depends on product, film, output and accepted finish.

Can shrink film damage printed covers?

Heat, film pressure, sharp corners, warm stacking and contact with guides can affect some coatings, inks, laminates, bindings or adhesives. Use production samples and inspect after cooling.

How should mixed book sizes be assessed?

Include the thinnest, thickest, smallest and largest products, plus the strictest presentation standard. Record film and guide changes and the first-off approval method.

Why test stacking after the tunnel?

Film can remain warm and continue to settle. Stacking or boxing too soon can mark the surface, create blocking or alter corners even when the pack looked acceptable at discharge.
